Photonic Wireless Communications

DST-FIST Sponsored (2018 – 2023)

The progressive developments of the mobile/wireless will not only be characterized by the growing capacity and improvement of the mobile / wireless system performance, but it will be also based on more connectivity and relates to the cooperation among different system capabilities with proper convergence in the next generation networks (NGN) and their ability to support and integrate with the Internet of Things (Machine to Machine (M2M) and Device to Device (D2D) Communications). Huge traffic growth as well as a significant reduction of latency dictated by time sensitive services will require a substantial transformation of the radio access networks (RAN) and, consequently, imposes a rethinking of the underlying transport network. Optical technologies with their conventional benefits of high bandwidth, protocol transparency, scalability, low latency, high resiliency and network reconfigurability, are today perceived as a promising key piece of the RANs puzzle, in both front haul and back haul transport areas. Optical transmissions enables Network Function Virtualization (NFV) processes based on the replacement of forwarding machines with virtual appliances of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). Moreover, new optical technologies like tunable lasers, flex-transceivers and on-demand connection setting could be used to provide a unified agnostic transport for different services. From these scenarios, it is clear that optoelectronics aided photonic aided communications will play an ultimate role in the connections required from all the heterogeneous mobile / wireless networks for various Industry and Societal applications.

ECE Faculty and Research Scholars are working on the following topics – Photonic Antennas, Terahertz Communications, Optical Materials, Optical Sensors, Signal Processing, Fiber Lasers; Radio over Fiber, and Photonic MEMS etc., and is represented in the following diagram.

SDR based MIMO test bed

DST-FIST Sponsored (2009-2013)

“As the growth in communication technology enables the requirement for high data rate support for application. There exist the need for targeting the digital signal applications to be tested for the growing wireless communication standards. There is a needed for demand for testing the algorithms developed for baseband signal processing in the FPGA and pass band transmission from transmitter side. Deployment in the SDR for MIMO configuration is the focus.”

  • Facility created will enable to test the baseband signal processing in the simulation as well test it in FPGA.
  • Design of RF components can be done using the simulation tool.
  • MIMO test bed is created, enables complete transmission and reception of MCS.
